Description
Known as the Tanzanian chestnut dwarf, Heterothele villosella is popular species that’s been in the hobby for decades. H. villosella is a non-imposing introduction to Old World tarantulas. There is an interesting copper and black pattern on the carapace, but the rest of the spider is mottled grey and brown. Perhaps H. villosella‘s most endearing attribute is its small size. Females barely reach 2 inches in leg span.
It tends to web enclosure surfaces near its shallow burrow.
Keep spiderlings over slightly dampened substrate, made by mixing 1 part water with 10 parts dry substrate. Limit ventilation only enough to allow humidity to build. Older specimens can be kept on drier substrate and in less humidity, perhaps with a water dish as insurance against dehydration.

Care highlights:
- slightly dampened substrate for spiderings
- elevated humidity (75-90% RH) +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- keep juveniles & older specimens on a drier substrate
- consider forest litter, hiding spaces and plantings for enrichment
