Description

Theraphosa blondi was the very first of the three Theraphosa to be described: Theraphosa blondi (1804), Theraphosa apophysis (1991), and Theraphosa stirmi (2010).

T. blondi is the true goliath birdeater. Unfortunately, the name has been somewhat indiscriminately applied to the other two Theraphosa species, leading to some confusion with respect to searches, images and purchases.

Native to French Guiana and some neighboring countries, T. blondi is rainforest creature. It thrives in warmth and humidity.

If one satisfies the simple room temperature requirement 68-72F, by far the most important factor in raising Theraphosa spiderings is humidity. Achieve proper humidity with slightly dampened substrate (1 part water + 10 parts dry substrate), limiting ventilation to allow humidity to build (85-95% RH). Temperatures greater than 72F, up to 80F or so, are fine. At warmer temperatures appetite and growth increase. Just be aware that enclosures dry faster at higher temperatures.

With growth, T. blondi acquires increased drought tolerance. Ventilation can be liberalized and enclosure moisture can be lessened. We prefer to keep substrate slightly dry at the surface, but include a damp corner or horizontal dampness gradient. We stave off dehydration further with a water dish and we keep humidity modestly elevated at 75-85% RH.

Care highlights:

  • slightly dampened substrate +/- water dish
  • adjust ventilation as needed to support humidity
  • although larger specimens do well with less enclosure moisture, maintain safeguards
  • room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
  • consider hide, forest litter and plantings for enrichment
