Description

Kept since the late 1900s, the popularity of Brachypelma hamorii (ex. smithi) is undiminished. An inhabitant of dry, forested terrain in Mexico, B. hamorii has high drought tolerance. Growth is slow and steady. In captivity females mature in 3-5 years. Maximum size is in the 5+” range. A hardy and long-lived species, life spans of captive females may exceed 25 years.

Larger captive specimens do well in enclosures with slightly dry substrate plus a water dish to allow them to adjust hydration as needed. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. Warmer is okay, just keep an eye on water evaporation.

Spiderlings do better with higher humidity. Keep them on slightly dampened substrate (1 part water + 10 parts dry substrate) and limit ventilation enough to allow some humidity to build.

B. hamorii tend not to dig, but will make use of a hide if provided. They are almost always fully or partly seen, making both health checks and feeding easy. Given colorfulness, docile nature and keeping ease, it’s easy to see why the Mexican red knee has been popular for so long.
