Description
Chilobrachys sp. “black satan,” a tarantula with a markety kind of name, is said to be native to Nepal, that is, Nepalese subtropical rainforest. Many internet sources say C. sp. “black satan” is Chilobrachys fumosus. We cannot find the source of this identification. Although probably correct, for the time being we’ll default to the name supplied with these spiderlings.
C. sp. “black satan” lives up to its name. In particular, it matures into a Chilobrachys-defensive, uniformly black tarantula. After a few molts, the dark even shows in the spiderling (see photos 1,2). Darkness, in this case dark charcoal grey, is unusual at this stage because as a rule, SE Asian Chilobrachys spiderlings are lighter shades of grey or brown.
An obligate burrower, C. sp. “black satan” digs tunnels in captivity. It’ll web the entrance and lie in wait, forelegs and pedipalps visible. Passing prey will trigger a jump-attack. Snatched prey is dragged inside.
C. sp. “black satan” likes water but not wetness, warmth but not too much. Keep spiderlings over slightly dampened substrate. Our recipe is 1 part water mixed with 10 parts dry substrate (1:10). Limit ventilation no more than needed to allow humidity to build. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. If you use warmer temperatures, to 80-85F for example, consider adding a water dish as insurance against dehydration.

Care highlights:
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 85F
- slightly dampened substrate (obligate burrower)
- elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- juveniles and adults may benefit from overall less enclosure moisture
- consider forest litter and plantings for enrichment
