Description
Many hobbyists know Davus pentaloris, the Guatemalan tiger rump. This medium-small tarantula is remarkable for contrasting orange and black, with bold striping on the abdomen and a bright, peach-orange carapace. D. pentaloris can dig, but you may see this opportunistic burrower more often than not.
One can find D. pentaloris on the shelves of new and experienced collectors alike. Keep spiderlings on slightly dampened substrate, limiting ventilation only enough to allow humidity to accumulate. Since humidity is invisible, how does one know the level? Pro tip: If after a cool night condensation forms on the walls of the enclosure, you know humidity is in the 90-100% range.
Female adult size: 4-5 inches
Photos: 1-adult female (ArachnoEden); 2-subadult female (ArachnoEden)
Care highlights:
- slightly dampened substrate (sds)
- elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- juveniles & older specimens can be kept on a drier substrate
- consider a hide, forest litter and plantings for enrichment
