There’ve been some nice Davus hobby additions lately. Davus sp. “Oaxaca” is one of them. Many hobbyists know Davus pentaloris, the Guatemalan tiger rump, females of which grow to 4-5 inches. D. sp. “Oaxaca” is a smaller version, with females reaching 3-4 inches. Some call these medium-small tarantulas semi-dwarfs.
D. sp. “Oaxaca” shares the basic color pattern of the Guatemalan tiger rump. They both have a bright peach-orange carapace and bold orange and black striping on the abdomen. The pattern of the striping is different between the two, as is often the case for different Davus members.
D. sp. “Oaxaca” may excavate and web a shallow hide below objects such as cork bark, but they are not pet holes. As opportunistic burrowers they tend to be seen more often than obligate burrowers.
New species generate interest among both new and experienced collectors alike. Keep spiderlings on slightly dampened substrate, limiting ventilation only enough to allow humidity to build. With humidity being invisible, how does one know the level? Pro tip: If after a cool night condensation forms on the walls of the enclosure, you know humidity is in the 90-100% range.
