Description
South Africa is home to nearly all Harpactira tarantulas in the hobby. Harpactira sp. “Silaka” is one of the most recent introductions.
Females grow to a leg span of about 3 1/2 inches. Males mature faster but at a smaller size. Juvenile and older H. sp. “Silaka” are easy to keep, with no special requirements other than room temperature (68-72F), a semi-dry to dry enclosure, a water dish and once or twice weekly feedings.
Spiderlings as always do better on slightly dampened substrate (1 part water + 10 parts dry substrate), with enough ventilation restriction to allow some humidity to build. As they grow in size they become more drought tolerant.
Although likely an obligate burrower we have not yet seen H. sp. “Silaka” dig in captivity. It will make use of a hide however and web extensively. H. sp. “Silaka” is defensive and should not be handled. Use tongs for feeding and cups for transfers. With these requirements met, H. sp. “Silaka” makes a safe and worthy addition to any African tarantula collection.
