Description
Homoeomma chilense (ex. chilensis) is from south central Chile. Climate here is Mediterranean-to-temperate, similar to southern Europe. H. chilense is a dwarf tarantula with a devoted following. Its popularity is attributable to docility, striking orange on black color pattern and non-intimidating, cute size. Add drought tolerance, low maintenance and longevity for a combination is hard to beat. Females mature at 2-2.5 inches and live 8-12 years.
In terms of popularity, the Chilean dwarf flame may even compete with longterm hobby classics such as the Brazilian black and GBB. Availability has not quite matched them, but has improved in recent years.
We raise H. chilense spiderlings on slightly dampened substrate: 1 part water + 10 parts dry substrate. We limit ventilation a little to allow some humidity to build. For juveniles and older we use less substrate dampness, less humidity. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine although growth is faster at 80F. A water dish can be useful to insure against dehydration, especially if ventilation is liberal.
We’ve raised these spiderlings beyond the usual quarter inch size to ensure better survivability in a new keeper’s hand. H. chilense is an opportunistic burrower so you’ll see it under a hide if you provide one.

Care highlights:
- slightly dampened substrate (sds) for spiderlings
- restrict ventilation to achieve a slightly humid environment
- lower enclosure moisture for juveniles and up
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- consider a hide, forest litter and plantings for enrichment
