Description
The state of Paraíba in northeastern Brazil is home to Lasiodora parahybana. Indeed, Paraíba’s former name, Parahyba, hints at the origin of the species’ name.
Due to Atlantic moisture falling on the eastern slope of a vast plateau, L. parahybana habitat is semi-arid, supporting deciduous, thorny scrub (Caatinga). With 8-9 months of dry season, L. parahybana is undoubtedly not a rainforest species, despite internet claims to the contrary.
Baby tarantulas do better in humidity. Raise your L. parahybana spiderling on slightly dampened substrate (1 part water + 10 parts dry substrate) and limit ventilation only enough to allow humidity to climb. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. When your pet reaches juvenile stage, a drier enclosure is preferable.
Females are sexually mature by about 7″ although reports of larger specimens exist. L. parahybana is hardy and fast growing. The number of spiderlings per sac can be an order of magnitude greater than the 100-200 obtained for many other tarantula species.

Care highlights:
- slightly dampened substrate for spiderings
- elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- juveniles & older specimens can be kept on a drier substrate
- an opportunistic burrower, consider a hide
- consider dry scrub litter and plantings for enrichment
