Description
Ornithoctonus sp. “Surat Thani” is listed here, an Old World from SE Asia. Judging from the name, O. sp. “Surat Thani” comes from southern Thailand. Climate here is as for southeast Asia in general, 8 months of wet season, including monsoon season, followed by 4 months of dry.
Female O. sp. “Surat Thani” mature at about 5 inches. By then their carapace and abdomen are brownish tan, the latter patterned with tiger stripes. Femurs are black. They’re obligate burrowers so digging and living in a tunnel is their nature, even in captivity.
O. sp. “Surat Thani” likes water but not wetness. Spiderlings in particular should be kept over slightly dampened substrate. Our recipe is 1 part water mixed with 10 parts dry substrate. Limit ventilation only enough to allow humidity to build (75-90% RH). Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. If you use higher temperatures, consider adding a water dish as insurance against unintended dehydration.

Care highlights:
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- slightly dampened substrate
- elevated humidity (75-90% RH)
- juveniles and adults may benefit from drier substrate +/- water dish support
- consider forest litter and plantings for enrichment
