Description
Phormictopus cancerides is widespread and well-known on the island of Hispaniola (divided west/east politically into Haiti and the Dominican Republic). P. cancerides is a large beautiful spider with a somewhat reactive temperament. We attribute decades of popularity in the US to size, attractiveness, hardiness and longevity.
Baby tarantulas do better with some humidity so place your P. cancerides spiderling on slightly dampened substrate (1 part water mixed with 1 part dry substrate) and limit ventilation only enough to allow humidity to climb. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. When your pet reaches juvenile stage, drier substrate and less humidity is preferable.

Care highlights:
- slightly dampened substrate for spiderings
- elevated humidity (75-90% RH) +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- juveniles & older specimens can be kept in drier conditions
- an opportunistic burrower, consider a hide
- consider forest litter and plantings for enrichment
