Description
Listed for sale is a female Acanthoscurria geniculata. Also known as the Brazilian white knee, A. geniculata is a hobby staple. Captive bred for decades, it’s native to eastern Brazil, near the mouth of the Amazon. Hobbyists covet A. geniculata for its dark brown and white banding on the legs. It grows to an impressive 6 inches plus. A. geniculata is hardy and adults are often on display.
Despite being a rainforest terrestrial, juvenile and adult A. geniculata do well in rather conventional enclosure conditions: room temperature (68-72F), dry to semi-dry substrate, a water dish and moderate ventilation. Weekly feedings are in most cases sufficient. A modest boost in humidity is fine for later instars/adults.
Although A. geniculata is a popular and lovely species, it is somewhat defensive. Holding is not recommended despite the plethora of web photos with fingers and hands near this species. Like many New World tarantulas, A. geniculata flicks irritating hairs when disturbed and can inflict a painful bite when threatened.
