Description
The pumpkin-patch tarantula recently got a scientific name. What we knew as Hapalopus sp. “Colombia large” is now Hapalopus formosus. Congratulations pumpkin patch tarantula.
It could be said that H. formosus started the dwarf tarantula niche in the hobby. Females reach adulthood at about 2.5 inches; maximum size is 3 inches or just over.
We suggest keeping this juvenile female on slightly dampened to slightly dry substrate. Ventilate conservatively so as to allow a bit of humidity to build. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. Warmer is okay, to 80F for example, but don’t let things dry out. As this female approaches maturity you can reduce enclosure moisture incrementally. A water dish will provide a safety margin.

Care highlights:
- slightly dampened to slightly dry substrate
- modestly elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- an opportunistic burrower, consider a hide
- consider forest litter and plantings for enrichment
