Description
Listed here is a juvenile Pamphobeteus fortis female tarantula, captive bred. Colombia is said to be home to P. fortis, the giant copper bloom. Little else is known regarding native range although initial reports suggest Bogotá.
The Pamphobeteus fortis available to us is remarkable for shades of coppery reddish brown overall, with a metallic starburst pattern on the carapace of semi-adults and adults. Exact color varies depending on instar and time between molts. Spiderlings have the zig-zag or Xmas-tree pattern on their abdomens.
As an opportunistic burrower, P. fortis will seek shelter under a hide, occasionally coming out mornings, evenings and especially at night. They eat well and grow well, with females reaching 7 inches in a few years.
The juvenile female offered here is well beyond the spiderling stage so it’s fine to keep her on slightly dampened to slightly dry substrate, limiting ventilation enough to allow a bit of humidity to accumulate. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine although growth will be faster at 80F. A water dish may allow her to optimize hydration.
Photos: 1-specimen for sale, post 12.15.25 molt (ArachnoEden); 2-specimen for sale 11.11.25 a few months from her next molt (ArachnoEden); 2-semi-adult female, relatively recent molt (ArachnoEden)
Care highlights:
- slightly dry substrate for juveniles through adults
- moderately elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- consider a hide, forest litter and plantings for enrichment
