Description
Listed here is a juvenile Pamphobeteus sp. “tigris” female tarantula, captive bred.
Ecuador is home to this species. A large tarantula, P. sp. “tigris” is remarkable for the uniform black color of freshly molted adult females. As opportunistic burrowers they tend to seek shelter under a hide, occasionally coming out fully on display. P. sp. “tigris” has been in the hobby for over a decade.
The juvenile female offered here is well beyond the spiderling stage so it’s fine to keep her on slightly dry substrate, limiting ventilation only enough to allow a bit of humidity to accumulate. Room temperature (68-72F) is good although growth will be faster at 80F. A water dish may help her adjust hydration status closer to ideal.
P. sp “tigris” is similar in size, color and temperament to P. sp. “cascada.” Unlike P. sp. “cascada,” adult females tend to show coat lightening a few months after a molt, spending most of the intermolt year medium to dark brown. Growth and feeding response however are the same.
Photos: 1-specimen for sale, a month or two from her next molt (ArachnoEden); 2-female, slightly later instar than 1, post-molt (ArachnoEden)
Care highlights:
- slightly dry substrate for juveniles through adults
- moderately elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- consider a hide, forest litter and plantings for enrichment
