Description
Listed for sale is a juvenile Phormictopus auratus female. The Cuban bronze tarantula, Phormictopus auratus, is endemic and widespread on the island of Cuba. Spiderlings of P. auratus are brown, different from spiderlings of Phormictopus on neighboring Hispaniola, all of which are blue. Named for its gold color, particularly evident on the carapace, P. auratus is large and robust. Females can live on the order of 15-25 years in captivity.
Baby tarantulas in general do better with some humidity. Juveniles and adults have more drought tolerance and care is straightforward. House this juvenile female on slightly dry substrate and limit ventilation enough to allow just a bit of humidity to accumulate. A water dish will help prevent unintentional dehydration. Adjust ventilation to suit conditions in your home’s geographic area. Room temperature (68-72F) is fine. Feed once or twice weekly.
Photos: 1-slightly larger 3″ female recently sold (ArachnoEden); 2-male and female 2-inch juveniles, recent molt and intermolt respectively (ArachnoEden); 3-female with adult color (ArachnoEden); 4-adult male (ArachnoEden)
Care highlights:
- slightly dry substrate for juveniles through adults
- slightly elevated humidity +/- water dish support
- room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F
- an opportunistic burrower, consider a hide
- consider forest litter and plantings for enrichment
