Description
A juvenile Sericopelma sp. “Chica” female is listed here for sale. S. sp. “Chica” is one of a handful of undescribed Sericopelma that have entered the hobby in recent years. All of them are variations of a large, basically black spider with a red rump. It’s the Mexican red rump look (Tliltocatl vagans). Seriously though, this look must have some ecological importance given its strong presence in genera from Mexico (Tliltocatl) to Central America (Sericopelma) to South America (Pamphobeteus).
Sericopelma grow to a similar size, 5-6 inches for females, and can be kept under similar conditions. They are native to Central America.
Temperament is also similar. Sericopelma don’t readily threat, but they’re bit reactive and not really handleable.
Room temperature (68-72F) and only moderately elevated humidity is fine for this S. sp. “Chica” female as it is a juvenile. Warmer temperatures to 80F are ok, but take measures to prevent drying. We sometimes rely on water dishes when daily inspection isn’t routine.
