Description

In addition to 2 scientifically described Sericopelma, over a dozen undescribed Sericopelma are in the hobby nowadays, most of them added in the past 10 years or so. Some of them have more name recognition than others it seems. Sericopelma sp. “Chiriqui is from Central America, specifically Panama we are told.

Analogous to Pamphobeteus in northwest South America, Theraphosa in northeast South America, and Phormictopus in the Caribbean, Seriocopelma seem to occupy the large-terrestrial-tarantula niche in Central America. All of them are large dark tarantulas, opportunistic burrows by report. S. sp. “Chiriqui” has been kept by hobbyists for at least the past half dozen years. Like its cousins it is a rainforest terrestrial. Keeping parameters therefore are very similar to those used for Pamphobeteus and Theraphosa.

Keep S. sp. “Chiriqui” at room temperature (68-72F) with elevated humidity (80-95% RH). Use slightly dampened substrate. It will slowly evaporate and generate humidity. Limit ventilation only enough to allow humidity to build up. Warmer temperatures up to 80F may be used to accelerate growth, but bear in mind that with warmth comes dryness. At 80F consider using a water dish in addition to dampened substrate to support humidity. As your pet grows you’ll find it tolerates a wider range of conditions. Drought tolerance will increase such that you’ll be able to increase ventilation, use less water in substrate, and perhaps eliminate the need for a water dish.
