Description

The species offered here is a juvenile female Tliltocatl kahlenbergi. T. kahlenbergi was described in only 2008. Recentness is remarkable since T. kahlenbergi comes from the third most populous state in Mexico!

Tliltocatl come from moist forested lowlands, different from the dry environments enjoyed by their Brachypelma cousins. Most of the former live along the Gulf of Mexico, the latter mainly along the Pacific coast and inland.

On the other hand, both Brachypelma and Tliltocatl are fossorial, living in existing or adapted burrows. Your T. kahlenbergi will readily move into a hide. In the absence of one she may dig. Females mature in about three years and reach an average of 5 inches. Males, in contrast, mature in less time and are often slightly smaller.

T. kahlenbergi‘s mating season is August to January. During this time, the rainy season changes to dry (November to May). Egg sacs appear after that and young emerge in late spring or early summer, just in time for rain, greenery and prey. Most interestingly, the Tungara frog, Engystomops pustulosus, has been found living in the same burrow as T. kahlenbergi.

Keeping parameters for T. kahlenbergi juveniles and adults are straightforward. They do well at room temperature (68-72F) up to 80F, with dry to semi-dry substrate, moderate ventilation, a water dish and a hide.
